STUDY IN USA

‘ Hamara Rohit Abroad Padne Ja Raha Hai' US mein course kar raha hai ‘–If that is what you want you parents to say, then scroll below.  We shall understand basics of US system in this article.

US is the land of dream fulfillment, of cutting edge quality, of mega bucks & life as you want it to be. In US ‘School’ refers to what we in India refer to a college/University. The first decision to be taken is ‘what to study’, though the area you want to

major in can be changed after Ist year or even IInd year. The next one is private vs public schools.  Since public schools are aided by State Govt., tuition costs are less. But generally speaking more financial aid is available in private schools.

Important: Regional Accredition & professional accredition are two types of review that establish authenticity of any institution.

Eligibility

Admission to a College or University in US requires a completion of twelve years of elementary and secondary education. In Indian context, this implies  class 12th examination.

Send enquiries at least 15-18 months before the proposed date of admission. Forms can be requested through e-mail or post or can even be down loaded from the university website.

How is admission given? It’s on the basis of (a) Your academic record (b) Performance in standard tests like SAT (c) Record of interest & co-curricular record (d) Personal statements of objective & goals (e) Recommendation from your Principal/Head (f) English Language proficiency.

SAT or Scholastic Aptitude Test is a measure of the critical thinking skills you need for academic success in college. The areas are (a) Critical Reading, which has sentence completion & passage based questions (b) Mathematics, which is based on VIIIth, IXth , Xth class maths (c) Writing.  SAT-I is scored out of 2400. SAT is held 6 times in a year: May, June, October, November, December & January

A few universities require SAT-II for entry into specific courses like Engineering, Computer Science and Economics. TOFEL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is more of a qualifying test and if you are able to listen & understand English & write it, you would qualify it easily.

Visit USEFI (United States Education Foundation of India), attend their sessions, browse through material kept in their library & interact with their counselor to gain.

The hot areas in which typically students are interested are- Engineering, Biotechnology, Management, Psychology, Travel & Tourism, Airlines, and Researched Based Options.

FINANCE
Little financial aid available at the undergraduate level and most students should be prepared to cover their entire cost. Part-Time jobs are however available on campus, and students can expect to cover a part of their living cost by working part time.

STUDY IN UK

UK figures high on the list of foreign destinations when Indian students are making a choice. One major advantage of U.K. education is its one-year Masters Degree for almost all courses – saving you considerable time and money. Also, unlike those in other countries, most UK universities recognize the Indian education system of 3 year graduation.

Details about various Qualifications offered by UK Colleges and Universities:

  • First Degree Courses in Arts and Sciences (Bachelor's degree) are normally of three or four years' duration and are largely taught courses, sometimes including the preparation of a short written thesis.
Sandwich Courses are where the coursework is accompanied by practical work. A student could either complete 2 years of college, then a year of commercial training before returning for a final year in college. Or, he/she could do a 4-year course with 3-6 months’ training interspersed each year. The main advantage is that the student gets real experience while in the learning mode. Most universities offer this type of education.
Higher National Diploma (HND) is awarded by Vocational and Technical Educational Councils. They offer a 2-year course in a vocational subject like scientific and technical business subjects. Great emphasis is placed on work experience. It is often seen as the first step towards a degree course as the credits can be transferred.
    • Vocational Courses offer an opportunity to enter the university system slowly. Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC), General Vocational Qualifications (GNVQ), General Scottish Vocational Qualifications (GSVQ) offer recognized courses in a range of disciplines. Most students opt to take 1-2 years of, for example, BTEC courses before being transferred to a degree programme. BTEC national certificates/diplomas are usually accepted as an alternative to A-Levels.
Typical cost for Indian students range from £ 6,500-8,000 per annum for graduation & post graduation. Living costs would be about £ 8,500 per annum.

  • INTAKE
The main intake for all the UK universities is either September or October but there are some universities that open admissions for certain courses in Jan. or Feb. also.

    EXPENSES

Tuition Fees & Living Cost Undergraduate:
10-12 lakhs per year inclusive of fees and living cost.

Postgraduate: 12-15 lakhs per year inclusive of fees and living cost excluding MBA where the cost will exceed 15 lakhs especially in the case of top universities.

    WORK WHILE STUDYING

International Students are allowed to work 20 hours per week in the UK during term time and full time during vacation period. There are vast opportunities for part-time and vacation work in the UK, as well as organised work placements at leading businesses, as part of courses. The minimum national pay rate in UK is £5 per hour. But there are no boundaries what you earn. Depending on your skills and knowledge, international students can easily earn £6 - £10 per hour.

STUDY IN AUSTRALIA

Australia has emerged as a popular destination for higher education because of its strong educational infrastructure, a high quality of life, and relatively lower expenses.
Australian degrees are gaining increased acceptance in the global arena, particularly in the Pacific rim countries. A peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, together with the cosmopolitan charisma of cities like Sydney and Melbourne – Australia could be the ideal destination for you.
All Australian universities recognize the various year 12 qualifications from different states. The universities also recognize a wide range of secondary school certificates from other countries as being equivalent to the Australian year 12 qualifications. Specifically, successful completion of class 10+2 from India is also accepted.
Some courses specify 'pre-requisite subjects'. This means that students must have passed this subject as part of their entry qualification; this is because in the first year it is assumed that students have a good basic knowledge of this subject. Pre-requisite subjects vary from course to course. For instance, a Bachelor of Arts degree might have no pre-requisite; a Bachelor of Commerce might require general Mathematics and Bachelor of Engineering may require advanced Mathematics/Calculus. Some courses, especially in art and design, also require students to submit folios of their work with their application
.
Masters degree and Graduate diploma: Most Australian universities accept the Indian graduation system of three years for entry into postgraduate courses.
International students at the higher education level can work on a casual basis (upto 20 hours a week) during course time and full time during vacation periods, provided this does not interfere with their study program.

Australia has a very well set vocational educational system. The Vocational Education & Training sector is divided into two sections: a nationally recognised government system of Technical and Further Education (TAFE); and private providers. TAFE is the largest provider of tertiary education courses in Australia with about 250 institutes and over a million students including about 41,000 international students.

The awards in VET sector are: certificates, advanced certificates, associate diplomas, diplomas. Studying at TAFE level is also a way of gaining entry - termed a pathway - to Australia's universities.

Most TAFE institutes have arrangements with specific universities, enabling students to gain credit for a portion of their study undertaken at TAFE. The VET courses include computing, design, pilot training, business management, hospitality and tourism and many other courses.

Universities (higher education):There are 37 public universities and two private universities in Australia which offer both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The most popular courses of study for international students have been in the fields of Business, Administration and Economics, followed by Science, then Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

There is a wide range of student accommodation available in Australia. These include university halls of residence, university apartments for post graduate students and privately rented independent housing. Students can also arrange a 'Homestay' with a local family or board at many of the private secondary schools. Once you get an admission, the university's international office would help you find a suitable accommodation. The typical cost is A $100-150 per week for these option.
It is a requirement of the Australian Government that international students register for the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before coming to Australia.

OSHC helps pay for medical and hospital care you may need while in Australia. The OSHC rates for a 12-month stay are $ 274 for a single premium and $ 548 for a family premium.

Undergraduate degrees are generally three years in Australia as compared to four years in U.S. and other countries. Annual Living Expenses in Australia are Approx. A $ 12,000 per year though it would depend on the course, college and location.
