EFFECTIVE CAREER PLANNING
|
“Let us take science if you score well in Xth Boards, otherwise we will opt for commerce” – Uncle of a 14 year old speaking to him on choosing stream. This is not the right way of planning one’s career. Career Planning starts with the individual himself or herself. Understanding oneself is very important. Thereafter, one can choose the stream effectively. A number of students don’t understand the avenues and are also not goal oriented. Lots of them choose the stream based on what their friends are advising.
One needs to understand one’s aptitude, personality, interests, abilities and what one values as an individual. Aptitude is what comes naturally to an individual or one’s special ability. Students can be shy/outgoing, creative, conventional or influence others. This determines their personality. A shy person would not fit into the role of a direct marketing company’s team and so on. Personality is an important parameter in the selection of a career and hence the stream also.
Thereafter, one needs to understand his/her interests. Students might need to delve deeper inside themselves to understand their real interests. One can take a cue from the activities one enjoys the most while at school or near home. We also need to check if we have the ability to take up a particular subject area or career. Abilities can be physical, mental and monetary in nature. For example if somebody wants to excel in athletics but does not have the physical ability to practise also, then it would be difficult.
Last but not the least, we should see what a person values. Some people value money, some glamour, some others power, some time for themselves and so on. One can not except fulfillment of everything in a particular career. So one can decide, prioritise and then choose stream accordingly.
One needs to understand that a number of careers can be chosen irrespective of the stream taken. So, the chosen stream should be of a student’s interest. The following careers are available:
-
Corporate or business careers- Entrepreneurship, Management (Sales & Marketing, Finance & Accounts, Human Resource Management, Systems, and Operations/Logistics), Company Secretary, Chartered Accountancy, Insurance and Banking. |
Careers involving interaction with a number of people or people based- Hotel Management, Psychology, Social Work, Teaching and Tourism. |
Creative Careers- Fashion Designing, Accessory Designing, Acting & allied careers, Interior Decoration & Design, Photography and Advertising.
|
- Careers involving outdoor work- Reporting/Journalism, Defence, Police, Physical Education.
|
Science based Careers- Biotechnology, Agriculture, Engineering, Medicine, Dental Science, Pharmacy, Merchant Navy, Commercial Pilot, Scientist, Medical Lab Technology, Dairy Science and Ayurved/Homeopathy & Unani. |
Certain other careers like Law and IT(Computers) can also be pursued.
Except for science based careers (& Defence i.e., NDA at 12th level), all other careers can be taken up by individuals with any subject combinations.
A commonly held myth is that if one does not have Maths, then one is doomed. This reasoning is not valid as explained above. A number of careers can be taken up by individuals who don’t have Maths viz. The four groups of careers listed above. Only thing one loses out is B.Com(Hons), Eco(Hons) and Computer courses(BCA, MCA). Though some places BCA can be undertaken without Maths also.
Another myth is that Humanities students don’t fare as well in life. Though Humanities students can also look at any career out of the first four groups mentioned, they can do well in civil services, law, social work, psychology or even journalism. In fact, now a number of goods students with a high percentage in Xth boards have started opting for humanities with clarity of the end goal in mind.

AIR HOSTESS /AIR STEWARD
Earn while you fly & reach out for a career in the skies. In reality, Airlines are not about flying only. There is ground crew which includes commercial services, customer services, security, administration, engineers, air traffic controllers, and the cabin crew which includes air hostesses, stewards, pilots. You can join the industry straight after 10+2, though most airlines prefer their staff to be graduates. No institute guarantees a job but most provide assistance in job search. Airlines place advertisements in newspapers & on websites to announce their requirements. Short-listed candidates are called for a preliminary interview followed by another round to check your physical attributes, confidence, and communication skills & grooming. Airhostesses or air stewards can be promoted to assistant manager of in-flight department and further director of in-flight services at the headquarter level.

Are you one of those who want to make your own destiny? Are you the one who wants to work for himself and get the satisfaction of being a self made man? Well, if you are thinking in those lines then you must be an entrepreneur in the making. An entrepreneur literally means an ‘undertaker’. An entrepreneur is a person who undertakes the task of bringing together an idea, resources and the organization to start a new venture.
Mr. Kedarnath Aggarwal, The Chairman, Bikanervala Group says – “If you can face the initial struggle for first three years, then you can be successful. You need lot of grit & determination to run an enterprise. Consistency also building up the business”.
While starting a new business, the entrepreneur has to decide about the following.
What are his objectives? |
What is he capable of ? Analysing his potential. |
Research the market to have a functional expertise.
|
- Familiarization with different rules, procedures and provisions.
|
Determine the sources of finance for his business. |
What steps must be taken to achieve his objectives? |
How to build up marketing? |
Anticipate constraints and how to overcome them? |

The planning to a venture should be very thorough. The more an entrepreneur knows about the market the more are the chances of success. After making a business plan one should acquire the necessary funds.
The next step is Organising which entails :
Grouping the tasks into related activities. |
Assigning responsibility and authority to your employees/partners/ consultants.
|
Define the responsibilities and the working relationship of each person.
|
An entrepreneur should ensure that everyone related with his project is involved in it. It is necessary that an entrepreneur should start well but it is also necessary to proceed well and have a sustained growth. The motto is not to give up till one is successful.

BIOTECHNOLOGY
You want to solve a big problem like droughts, or infectious diseases, improve crop yields, detect & treat heart diseases- Go for biotech. The underlying thread is to be able to harness the energies of the living world to improve upon the existing medical, industrial & agricultural knowledge. Plant yields can be improved, newer varieties can be developed, new vaccines can be made, changes at embryo level can be done to remove genetically transmitted diseases.
Biotech is an interdisciplinary area & requires chemical engineers, biochemists microbiologist, computational scientist, virologists immunologists, etc….. Suppose a company wants to develop a medicine from a plant. It will commission a botanist to find the plant , a horticulturist to grow it in pre specified conditions, a tissue culture specialist to isolate properties responsible for the cure, an organic chemist to work on the molecular compound & so on.
Government is also chipping in by providing tax holidays, for Agri-Biotech Companies, favouring use of genetically modified crops.
A word of caution! Starting salaries are in the range of Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month & immediate growth is not likely to happen. Moreover, private institutes are not able impart practical training due to lack infrastructure & practical expertise.
After XIIth a person having Physics, Chemistry & Biology can do B.Sc in life Sciences, Botany. Zoology, Microbiology. Biotechnology and thereafter MSc (Biotechnology). Alternatively, a PCM students can do B.Tech ( Biotech). M- tech or Ph D would also be required for a fast growth.
As per Government estimates, the market for biotech products will grow to $5 billion by 2010 with pharmaceutical & medical biotech being major players. So there is a good demand but independent research opportunities would only be available after working for 7-8 years. So rack up your research brains & complete for a slice of biotechnology.

ENGINEERING
Scene: A family gathering; Mamaji asks Vaibhav-‘Beta bade ho kar kya karoge’. Vaibhav, a IXth class student replies-‘Engineer Banoonga’. And both Mummy & Pappa smile ear to ear. All relatives become satisfied that Vaibhav will be a good boy now & do well. A lot of students think about engineering because others are also thinking on the same & it is prestigious to do it. Understand if you are really interested in doing something technical or working in manufacturing or better still research & development, then decide about engineering. A number of students just take up engineering after XIIth & just work in computer programming area or do MBA & become managers. So just think.
Lets understand the various fields of engineering -
Agriculture Engineering:- It deals with design and development of farm implements and machineries, production, processing, transportation and storage of agricultural commodities, land and water resources management, agricultural production and manufacture of processed foods. As more & more corporates invest in Agriculture & Food Sector, number of jobs for professionals would increase significantly.
Automobile Engineering:- After competing this, you would be working in design, development, repair & manufacturing of automobiles.
Biotechnology:- Here, courses are inter-disciplinary viz. molecular life science on one side & technical ( Bioreactor Design, Bioprocess Technology, Metabolic Engineering) on other. You would be getting into a research job with government bodies like DBT, IGIB or pharma companies like Ranbaxy, Cipla, & so on.
Bio-Medical Engineering:- Design & manufacturing of Artificial Heart, Limbs, use of computers in diagnosis, Cryosurgery, Use of lasers in surgery, all are undertaken by them.
Ceramic Engineering:- Ceramics is used for all materials which require a high temperature in processing. Engineers may specialize in production of glass used in tableware, fibre optics, electronic equipment, cement, ceramic for pottery, structural ceramics for tools machine, components & electronic ceramics for integrated circuits, sensors etc.
Civil Engineering:- Just check out construction activity all around –roads, houses, malls, & so on & you would realize the growth in this sector. Civil engineers deal with design & construction of any kind of structures including nuclear power plants.
Computer Engineering:- This option is by far the most desirable option as money is good in this sector & growth opportunities abound. One might work on the hardware front –microprocessors, display units, printers & PCs or the software front – programmers. Computer engineers after some experience can also work with consulting firms.
Environmental Engineering:- They monitor & control pollution and deal with the likely impact on environment of proposed new projects.
Chemical Engineering :- It is concerned with the designing, construction, installation & operation of plants & equipments for manufacture of chemical products. Chemical engineers work in petroleum refining, fertilizer sector, synthetic food, petrochemicals, coal, synthetic fibre, mineral based industries, paint, acid & plastics companies.

GENETIC SCIENTISTS
Do you want to make a new tomato which is as big as a hot air balloon or remove all harmful medical impacts of parents (e.g. Haemophilia- Disorder which results in non-clotting of blood) - Go for Genetics which is the study of heredity. Genetic scientists research genes, study the effects of heat, light, temperature & chemicals on these.
The scientists study the structure, composition, function & replication of chromosomes & genes. Genetic engineering involves changing the gene structure by rearranging, altering or splicing. Hence in this way new seeds can be developed or livestock can be improved.
Lots of research work is coming from countries like US to India. Multinational Pharma companies find that doing research is comparatively cheaper in India
(almost 1/10th) as manpower costs are low. So research is sub-contracted to companies like Biocon or even Indian Pharma Companies.
Individuals work with Government Research Organizations, Pharma Companies, Biotech Research Companies, Hospitals & a numbers of opportunities are available abroad.
One would need PCB in The XIth & Xth class. Thereafter BSc(Genetics)is available at a few places or after BSc. in any life sciences, one can do MSc (Genetics). So create new beings, plants, seeds and remove all the diseases from this world.

INSURANCE
The waves of liberalization have hit the insurance sector and more than twelve multinational companies like Commercial Union are now present in India. Earlier Life Insurance was basically projected as a means of tax savings. The risk element involved in loss of life was never broached. However, all that is going to change. The pension and medical products are expected to see limitless opportunities of growth.
Let us understand the various kinds of jobs that would be available. In the first place we have actuaries- people who create mathematical models to price new insurance products, calculate risks and cost of insuring. Second is surveyors- individuals who go to the scene of an accident/fire/theft and estimate the loss. Third is agents/sales professionals- people who seek and service clients. In fact, in developed countries abroad, jokes abound about insurance sales people- who are chipkoos and who don’t go away till one buys an insurance product from them.
Till now in the insurance industry, LIC and GIC have been recruiting graduates(based on an entrance test) and have been giving them on- the- job training. Now private companies, particularly multinationals would look for individuals who have been trained professionally.
A good numeracy skill is required to be successful in an Insurance career.
INSURANCE SALES
A major advantage is that it does not require any investment to start work. Another advantage is that insurance sales does not have time or territorial restraints.
One can earn well in case one puts in hard work. Insurance selling offers an attractive payment plan where 25 % of first year’s premium(on the policy sold) comes to the agent as his commission. Then, the agent further gets a renewal commission at the rate of 7 ½ % of the premium for the second and third years and at 5% for all subsequent premiums received under the policy. Companies like LIC now provide various facilities to its professional agents. For example, an agent who is a member of the Chairman’s or Zonal Manage’s Club, is provided with car, telephone, computer, office maintenance expenses and housing loan at 5.25 percent rate of interest.
In case the agent wants to join the company, he has the opportunity for becoming a Development Officer by passing a prescribed test. Then he can continue to rise as a Branch Manager, Divisional Manager.

Do you aspire to get a high salary, dollar allowances, foreign travel and duty free perks at an early age? The career at sea is rewarding not in terms of money but is full of adventure also. The main officers on the ships are executives or navigators and engineers. Engineers manage all technical activities like manning ship’s engine room i.e. engines, boilers, pumps, hydraulic and fuel systems and the ship’s electricity generating plant and distributing system. Executives look after all activities on the deck. The captain or master is in command of the ship. He is responsible for the vessel’s navigation, discipline, safety of passengers, crew and the cargo.
A number of multinationals like Maersk, P&O Nediloyd are active in India and they actively recruit Indians for even international positions. PHOTOGRAPHY
If Capturing a slice of life and putting it away, so that it can be taken out later and savored is our cup of tea, check at photography as an option, Photographers tell stories with pictures. They also click photographs.
Photographers, like artists, have a wide variety of choices as far as subjects are concerned. The choices, in fact, are as varied and diverse as life itself. From photojournalism (which deals with lending a visual touch to news reporting) to wild life photography, fashion photography, photo portraits, still-life photography and mood photography, there’s a comprehensive list of options to choose from. There are two routes into this career-through training & working. A course or formal training in the subject opens options for working with magazines or newspapers. With a regular income, there is always an opportunity to experiment with a wide range of subjects.
The second is to learn as an apprentice to a professional photographer, which can involve learning the basic jobs before getting to know the real techniques of the profession. Photography is more of a craft learnt through practice and training of the eye. Technical training and information cannot make you ‘see’ things unless you have that inner ability, an intelligent, curious and perceptive mind.
Establishing oneself as a professional photographer is difficult and the climb is hard and long, and the financial returns, not very satisfactory in the beginning. Only those with tenacity and a never-say-die attitude, coupled with a real love of the medium hold on.
Fledgling photographers can start working as assistants to senior photographers, in which capacity they are paid around Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000. Established photographers generally get paid as per the number of assignments handled by them, and their charges could vary from Rs 10,000 to as high as Rs 30,000 per assignment.
Photojournalists earn around 6000-7000 at start to Rs. 25000 or more later on.

PSYCHOLOGY
If you are fascinated by how childhood affects the adulthood, the personality of individuals and want to know more about conscious & unconscious mind psychology is the right career for you. Dhara Khokhar, a 3rd year psychology student at the elite I.P. College for girls says – ‘I have always wanted to understand humans and their behaviour. I was also fascinated by the subject in XIth & XIIth class. I want to work in the field of Rehabilitation and Psycho-analysis.’ Psychology is the scientific study of behavior, experiences and mental process. It provides coherent answers to all the mental & emotional tribulations faced by human being. Does anyone teach us how two human beings should intermingle, why we hate or love? Psychology provides a rationale to our ‘Abnormal behavior’. Dr. V. S. Ravindran, a practicing psychologist says – ‘I have been handling different kinds of problems like marital problems, study problems, depression, anger, stress, relationship issues and each problem is unique as individuals are different. So, there is a new challenge with every client. This field is also growing as the level of stress is increasing in the society.’
Psychologists study human behavior & mental processes to understand, explain & change behavior. The knowledge of psychology is used in educating children, guiding youth, rehabilitating handicapped, training personnel, selling products, easing group tensions and race conflicts. Some of the work positions in the field of psychology are counselors, guidance officers, clinical psychologists and industrial psychologists. In corporate sector a psychologist can operate as a personnel manager or HR consultant. Teaching is another career option. In fact there is qrowing need for psychologists in every field. There are psychologists during selection in Army, Civil services and even in the corporate sector.

RADIO JOCKEY
Priety Zinta did it in Salaam Nameste and Vidya Balan in “The Mahatma versus Munnabhai”. And how can we forget our “Bhaiyon aur Bheno” style of Ameen Sayani the golden voice of yesteryears - who began his radio career in 1951 with Radio Ceylon and a later kept millions engrossed with “Binaca Geet Mala “ on AIR . Today he anchors a show on RED FM in addition to producing a number for the network.
According to him “A RJ (radio jockey) is a mouthpiece of the station, he has to take the burden of representing the right , as well as the dark side of the station.” A radio jockey is a person who hosts a radio talk show, where he/she selects the music to be played and also interacts with the audience via telephone.
The last decade has brought about a sea change in the way people look at entertainment and the media is racing to provide them with just what is being asked for. The radio boom - that was seen in the form of transformation form AM (amplitude modulation ) channels to FM (frequency modulation) channels- witnessed a new industry rising. This gave opportunities to various private players such as Radio Mirchi, Radio Mid-day, Red FM, Radio City etc. As such there has been resurgence in the popularity of Radio.
Radio jockeys often work within tight schedule constraints, which can be physically and mentally stressful. However, as Jayshree, who is in as RJ for past six years feels, that the intangible rewards - personal and professional contacts, creative work, and the satisfaction of becoming widely known far outweigh the disadvantages of irregular and often unpredictable hours, work pressures, and disrupted personal lives. One should be able to evolve a style of his own. Watch all other stations, and listen to all others like BBC, CNN, FM, not to copy but to avoid any duplications. He should try to deliver interesting stuff without being too hyper and definitely not theatrical.
Training
There are a host of crash courses in voiceovers or mixing run by professionals in the field. At present there are two ways of gaining entry into the RJ field. Give an audition at AIR who holds auditions for RJs every 3 months and notices are out up on a board at the AIR building. There is a form to be filled to enroll yourself for the audition.
The programme coordinator holds the auditions and you might be asked to do a mock interview with say Hrithik Roshan or a mock dial- in show etc. Its highly competitive and around 300 hopefuls give auditions, out of which only 6 are chosen. After selection, the AIR trains you for a period of 2 months where you learn everything from a CD player to mixers and DATS ( Digital Audio Technology) etc.
Another option for entry is to approach the software producing company (that produces radio programmes for the client ) directly. Software Producer generally prefer people with 2-3 years experience. Sponsored programs pay you between Rs. 2500 to 4000 per show.
So, If you love to have the opportunity to talk and interact with new people everyday, love music …. WHATS STOPPING YOU? ……..

Retail organizations need people in diverse areas like sourcing, merchandising, product development, supply chain management, store operations, marketing, finance, HR & IT to support service delivery. A majority of jobs are available in customer service & marketing. For Entry level jobs, even a XIIth class pass with the requisite aptitude is fine but for managerial jobs, further studies are needed.
Mr. Vishal Solanki, Manager, Ebony opined that the industry is booming right now & ample job opportunities are there. With the entry of multinationals, this sector would witness a huge jump in salaries also. There is a need for creative people (read designers), salespersons, showroom managers, marketing guys & finance professionals. Despite its glamour’s appeal, however, the retail industry is not for everyone. Long hours are norm & lot of time one would be standing. TEACHING
A sweeping change is happening in one of the largest of all professions in India. The change enabling factors are (a) Corporatisation of Education i.e., entry of companies & big industrial houses in school sector (b) IT/Computers in education (c) Teaching abroad gaining in popularity (d) Privatization of education (e) Entry of foreign institutions after implementation of GATT (General Agreement in Trade & Tariffs). Due to these, salary levels have changed dramatically - Rs. 50000 to Rs. 1 lakh per month at good schools/private universities on the higher side and around Rs 20,000 to 30,000 on the median.
For getting in the school sector, Bachelor’s + B.Ed is needed or Master’s + B.Ed. For colleges, one has to clear UGC’s NET ( National Eligibility Test) exam & then apply to colleges. A doctorate (PhD) qualification would help. For professional institutes, one needs to do post graduation viz, M.Tech (for engineering institutes), MBA (for management institutes) & a PhD would again help.
A positive side of teaching career is that one can plan time better. Typical school hours are from 7:30 am to 2pm & colleges 8am to 3:00 or 3:30 pm. Though the work can be tiring & trying. It can also become monotonous if one is not innovating. NTT, JBT, ETE are qualifications to be taken if one is interested in teaching primary classes. These can be done after XII class (any stream).
Beyond Teaching Moreover, teachers after gaining subject experience can look at the following :
(a) Content Development with IT companies like Jaypee who are developing software for schools, curriculum packages
(b) Online tutoring: Organizations like Liqvid, Career Launcher are providing online tuitions to kids in US, UK & other countries
(c) Trainers: Wipro, Microsoft, Planetvidya organize a number of teacher training programmes where they need subject experts also.
(d) Publishing: Writing books, articles for papers etc.
(e) Developing Course Material for competitive Exams (f) Parallel Education : Running coaching institutions.
Fly out
US needs thousand of teachers. China & Malaysia also want our teachers. Why Indians? (a) We speak the most clear English in the world (b) We are a very competitive race & also we become more dedicated when we are working outside India. Hence, one would find a scenario after three-four years wherein somebody would be going to Britain for a 3 years assignment or fly off to Malaysia for a two year stint.
So all in all it is a career which needs to be looked at seriously.

TRAVEL & TOURISM
Remember the last holiday, when you went to a hill station or a beach resort? It was your dad (or mom) who got all the reservation (rail, air, hotel, sight seeing etc) done. Now think of being on the other side i.e., You organize everything for individuals/groups who want to travel. If you are enthused, then read on.
The Government departments formulate policy, select and develop tourist destinations, plan travel facilities, publicise the destinations and provide relevant information to tourists. In the private sector, one can start working as a trainee after doing an IATA recognised qualification and then build up one’s career.
Indian Institute of Travel & Tourism Management(www.iittm.org) are premier institutes in this sector. They offer Bachelor’s degree courses, certificate courses and also post-graduate level courses. Most competitions test one’s aptitude in English(Vocabulary & Grammar), Maths(9th & 10th level), G.K. & Reasoning. Even if one does not have Maths in XIth & XIIth, one can compete in these exams.
Individuals from premier institutes start off with a salary of about Rs 10000 to Rs 15,000 a month and can look at earning Rs 20,000 – Rs 25,000 after some experience. People who travel abroad earn much more as they get dollar allowances. Diploma or an IATA qualification would fetch one around Rs 4,000 start.
So go ahead enjoy while you work, see those beautiful places and meet wonderful people.
